Myanmar Earthquake
On 24 and 25 March four earthquakes occurred in north-east Myanmar near the borders with Thailand and Laos. The strongest was of magnitude 6.8. Their occurrence was not widely reported owing to the news media's preoccupation with events in Japan and Libya. A further earthquake in the same locality but within Laos occurred on 26 March.
Over 100 people may have died and 150 may have been injured as a result of the earthquakes. These figures include 25 who died and 50 who were injured when a church building in which they had gathered for worship collapsed. Ten church buildings in all may have been destroyed. Among the dead in Tarley Township was a pastor. Many of the injured were taken to Tachiliek General Hospital, but doctors are reported to have given up hope of saving many of them.
In one village several church members' houses collapsed and their church building was badly damaged.

We are in contact with local Christian teams who are helping to alleviate the effects of this disaster. They have little in the way of resources to buy food for the hungry and building materials for the reconstruction of houses, and they are looking to the worldwide body of Christ for help. Because of the need to protect the identity of Christians at risk from persecution we cannot provide details of churches that have been affected or agencies seeking to help them, but we believe we can trust them to use donations with integrity.
